My name is Curtis Higgons and I was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV and moved to Jacksonville, FL after graduating from high school. I attended college at Jacksonville University and earned his Bachelor’s Degree.
I dealt with health challenges my entire life. I was born with Cystic Fibrosis and I have been through many different procedures and surgeries that has changed my entire life. One in particular back in December 2013 was one that turned my entire life in a complete 180 and on the right track to success.
While I was in my final semester of college, the doctors had talks with my family and I regarding an organ transplant. A month later I got really sick and was not doing well. During the transplant evaluation, it was determined that I had an obstruction in my superior vena cava that forced my body to have a very fast resting heart rate. My transplant team told us that I would not be able to receive organs unless a superior vena cava bypass surgery was performed and was successful.
On December 20, 2013 that became a reality. I got really sick and nothing was working so they went into invasive surgery to fix my superior vena cava with the bypass. It was a successful procedure, but I was not doing well. I got put on an ECMO on Christmas Eve, which is a machine that is a self transfusion and oxygen is received through the blood in the process. It is a form of life support and I was also put on the lung transplant list in the process. 4 days later on December 28, 2013, I received the gift of life and woke up a few days later breathing on my own. I was in the hospital for 60 days and 12 days in rehab for nerve damage in my left leg from the procedures. Since being out of the hospital, I have never felt better.
I am an avid bowler and I am the Owner & CEO of Limitless Digital Media. I attend the Transplant games of America and the World Transplant Games every year. I am grateful to be a 14-time medalist and 5-time gold medal winner. I try to inspire as many individuals I can everyday.
